GeoTerrestrial FAQ
FAQ
  • Uh..what does it do?
GPSToday installs as a today-screen plugin on your Windows Mobile internet-enabled device. At the most basic level, it keeps your GPS hardware primed whenever you need it. But that is only for starters. In general, it will significantly enhance the utility you derive from your device. Check the home page for a (nearly) full list of features.
  • I installed it, and it just sits there. Where is the action?
By default, GPSToday attempts to automatically obtain GPS fixes only from 8:00am to 8:00pm everyday. You can change these times in the Map > Settings dialog. To manually attempt a quick fix, tap the red button on the today-screen.
  • Why does the GPS stop on its own after a couple minutes?
GPSToday periodically activates your GPS to update your location, and prime the GPS hardware. It is meant to run attended, and therefore it turns off the GPS as soon as it obtains a fix, or fails because you are indoors. To learn how to run the GPS in persistent mode, follow on to the next question.
  • How can I keep the GPS on until I stop it?
If you want to run the GPS persistently until you manually stop it, slide the red button over and drop it onto either of the two buttons on the right.
Warning: You must remember to stop the GPS by repeating the same gesture when you are done. Leaving the GPS on for extended periods of time will severely deplete your device battery.
  • What does this screen do?

Tapping the timer icon on the today screen brings up this selection.
    • The first option turns the GPS auto-fix mode off.
    • The second option tells GPSToday to adaptively determine the periodic quick-fix interval.
    • The remaining options configure the specific interval at which GPSToday will attempt auto-fixes to update your current position.
  • What does it do to my device's battery life?
In the default configuration, GPSToday will typically reduce your battery life by 10-15% over the course of a day. This much is usually not an issue for the vast majority of users. To have full control over battery consumption, you can disable the automatic periodic quick-fix functionality via Map>Settings. The more frequently you update your fix or run the GPS in persistent mode, the more it will affect battery life.
  • Does it do directions?
    Not yet.
  • Can it find a location by address?

  • Yes. From the map window, More -> Find -> Location.
  • I can see the speed and direction information fine when I run the GPS, but the address is not showing up. The map is also blank. What's wrong?
Your device is not connected to the internet. Please connect and then try again. To have GPSToday automatically connect when required, enable the "Initiate Connection If Needed" option in the Map>Settings dialog.
  • When I uncheck "Show Contacts", the contacts don't disappear. Why?
    Upgrade to the latest version.
  • All I see on the today screen is my city name. Where is the full street address?
    Either:
    1. Your GPS has not been able to obtain a fix yet.
    2. You are not connected to the internet.
    3. A street address could not be determined for your location.

  • I am near a contact whose address is in my address book, but I don't see it either on the map or the today screen. What gives?
Some addresses are not properly recognized if they have apartment or suite numbers in the street information.

  • Everytime I open the Map window, it takes a long time for all my saved local searches to complete. Do I need to delete my searches to make it faster?

No! Open the Local Searches dialog, tap "Select All", then tap "Toggle" once or twice until all the searches become red/disabled. Now your searches are still saved, but they will not be executed until you enable any of them again. To enable and run a single entry, just tap on it and tap Search. This will simultaneously re-enable the search and also execute it.
  • Can you describe the function of the buttons in the Map window?

The functionality of the buttons from left to right:
    1. Zoom-In
    2. Zoom-Out
    3. Recenter the Map position to the last known GPS derived position. Additionally, this button turns red whenever the map is not synchronized to the GPS position, so you always know.
    4. Re-execute your saved local searches around the current map center.
    5. Close the Map window.

  • In the Map Window More menu, what is the difference between Run GPS and Quick Fix ?
Run GPS will start up your GPS hardware and leave it running until you manually stop it.
Quick Fix will attempt to start up your GPS and automatically stop when it gets a fix, or if it fails after trying for a few minutes.
  • What about VGA support?
As of version 0.9.8.1, GPSToday supports VGA resolution (480x640) in either portrait or landscape mode.
